What’s my latest line?

Welcome back to another blog hop, with #OpenBook. Here’s this week’s prompt.

What is the best line/s that you’ve written recently?

That’s a good question. And not as easy to answer as you might think. While I write around half a million words a year, isolating a sample of them out of context can be tricky.

My novels might be set in the future, or an alternative now, but they’re usually based on a real-life event that I’ve seen or heard of. I’ve merely interpreted it (or its possible outcome) in a different way.

My favourite way of doing that is by starting off with a normal situation, one where I can get the reader comfortable. Then, I try hitting them with a left-field, unexpected twist.

With that in mind, here’s a short extract from my upcoming novel, My Place, or Yours?

I got out and went to lift the bags from the car, as Becc opened the front door. In two trips, I dragged all the bags inside and dumped them in the kitchen. The house felt warm and comforting.

“Right,” Becc said, her back to me. “Let’s get this lot unpacked, then we can get ready to go out.” She pulled off her gloves and removed her coat. Blonde hair spilt down her back.

That was where the nightmare started. Becc had short, jet-black hair. Or at least, she had done when she had got up and gone to the bathroom in the café, less than an hour ago.

As she spun around and faced me, I saw a sharp, angular face. She fixed her gaze on me, and a huge smile broke out.

She was pretty. But it was a stranger’s face.

“Who the hell are you?” was all I could say.

As you might expect, as the story progresses, things only get stranger as everyone tries to work out what is going on.
