Now that it’s the new year, tell us a favourite holiday memory. (Any holiday!)
I’ll have to take you back to 1984. Yvonne and I had been married for less than two years. I came back from a four-month trip at the beginning of July, and we booked a camping holiday in the South of France for August.
It was a long journey, 24 hours on a coach to Hyères, about an hour from Toulon, to a place called La Presqu’Ă®le de Giens.
On the Mediterranean sea, it had a white sandy beach, there was the smell of Oregano on the breeze and an abundance of food and drink.

We sat on the beach, swam and went on excursions to San Tropez and Monaco. We hired bicycles to explore the local area. It rained on the day we were cycling around, a really cold, tropical downpour, but we had a great time.
Yvonne felt sick towards the end of the week, which we attributed to the soaking we’d got and a possibly dodgy croque-monsieur eaten while sheltering from the weather in a roadside cafĂ©.
We finished off with a crazy journey home. There were delays at the ferry terminal at Calais, then the train from London taking us home broke down, and we had to get a bus for the last bit.
But we laughed through it all.
When we’d recovered from that holiday, we found out why Yvonne had been feeling rough.
The next April, we welcomed Amy-Rose.
