Don’t do this. And don’t do that!

Welcome back to another blog hop, with #OpenBook. Here’s this week’s prompt.

Don’t forget to click the link to see what everyone else has to say on this week’s subject. It’s at the end of my post.

What is the biggest “don’t” in writing? (What should a writer never do?)

The biggest? There’s a long list of things, most of which I’ve done at one time or another. It’s all part of the learning process. And it seems to vary, as “one” thing trends, until it’s replaced by another.

Using AI to write is a hot topic at the moment, and it’s certainly a don’t from me. My work has been used (some would say stolen) to train AI, and it annoys me that I wasn’t consulted before the event.

Because I would have said no.

In the name of research, I did a quick Google search, using the blog prompt, and it looks like just about everything you could possibly do when writing has people saying you shouldn’t do it.

To show you what I mean, here’s a post I spotted on Threads. It’s meant as satire (I think/hope) but sums it up pretty well.

Yes, it’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but it illustrates the point. Whatever you do will be “wrong” as far as someone is concerned.

If that’s going to be the case, then I’d rather write to please myself.

I’m sorry in advance if that upsets anyone.

Instead of thinking about the nuts and bolts of writing, grammar and plotting, or whether I adhere to some kind of idealised desire, I’m concentrating on writing exactly what I want.

Perhaps the biggest don’t is this.

Don’t take any notice of negative people, and as long as it’s not directly harming anyone, write what you want.

There will always be someone who wants to read it. You just have to find them.

I’ve learned that it’s important to please yourself first. Because you’ll never please anyone that’s more important.

It’s a pity that there is so much negativity around artistic creation.
