Name one thing that a writer should never do.

This is an easy one. I can speak with authority, from personal experience.

If someone takes offence at a post, misunderstands you or tries to start an argument with you on social media, NEVER ENGAGE.

And that’s it. Post your truth politely and answer any sensible replies, without being contentious. Ignore anything else.

People may try to wind you up, scam you or accuse you of all sorts of things, usually without any concrete evidence.

Whatever happens, don’t get sucked into an exchange of comments.

You may be justified in your position, but that’s not relevant when you’re dealing with people on the internet.

Remember, trolls will be trolls. The important thing is not to feed them. No matter how right you are or how passionately you feel about sticking up for yourself, don’t do it.

The effort may make you feel better, but it will never have the expected (or desired) effect.

You’re so much better off ignoring it all, blocking people and moving on.

I could tell you how I found this out the hard way, but I’d rather not revisit it all. It changed the way I approached social media, talked to people online and ultimately, how I talk about being an author and market my books.
