I never met a calorie I didn’t like.

Welcome back to another blog hop, with #OpenBook. Here’s this week’s prompt.

Don’t forget to click the link to see what everyone else has to say on this week’s subject. It’s at the end of my post.

Do you prefer pie or cake? Have you ever included either in your writing?

I’m partial to a pie, sweet or savoury. But I’m also partial to a cake, especially with coffee. And so are some of my characters.

Let me explain.

I tend to think of pie as part of a meal. It might be a beef or chicken and vegetable pie as a main course, or an apple or cherry pie for dessert.

It’s not something I would normally consider eating when out and about, as an accompaniment to coffee or tea.

I see cake as something different. It’s a treat, a bonus feature. Part of a ritual of a day out. If we’re off on a day out, there’s a 90%+ chance of some cake. I always make sure I have room for a piece at coffee time.

For context, here’s the cake I had last Friday.

Yoghurt-topped Raspberry Flapjack.

Then we come to Andorra Pett.

By the way, the title of this post is a quote from an interview Andorra gave a while ago.

That was an early cover concept for her first adventure. In it, Andorra takes over the running of a café, despite never having done anything like that before. It’s all part of her new start when she has to run from a bad situation.

She feels confident, after all, she knows how to cook. Her mother taught her, and as Andorra so succinctly puts it, “she never killed anyone.”

She’s partial to cake herself, which makes her a character after my own heart.

Now that she’s running a café, she has to make cakes and pies for her customers. Her buddy, Cy, reckons that she couldn’t do toast without a recipe and a video.

But that’s just banter between friends, right?

Of course, she doesn’t know that the body of the café’s previous owner is residing in one of her freezers. And that bad people are searching for something that he owned. But she will, very soon. When they start to make her life interesting.

The stage is set for a murder mystery with the café as a central part of the story.

The twist is that the café is on a space station.

I suppose that means that her cakes and pies are out of this world.
