A view from the other side

Welcome back to another blog hop, with #OpenBook. Here’s this week’s prompt.

Don’t forget to click the purple button to see what everyone else has to say on this week’s subject. It’s at the end of my post.

Stolen from an X (twitter) post: Which genre do you think ghosts prefer: mystery, thriller, horror, fairytale, or magical realism?

As an author, a weaver of tales, I often wonder what life must be like in the spirit world. With no concrete information to guide us, we have to make various assumptions about what their (after)life must be like.

For example, can they see everything that we do? Do they have more knowledge than us, presumably they must have a better understanding of how everything is connected?

Fortunately, the voices in my head appear to have a better appreciation of the way things work.

Because, while I was marshalling my thoughts, here’s the message I received.

You living people have no idea. Do you honestly think that we spend our existence reading, or watching pictures on a screen? Or that we even care for such things as genre? We have enough to keep us busy, in the realm beyond the veil.

There’s the never-ending task of greeting new arrivals. When we’re not doing that, we’re catching up with everyone we once knew or giving little hints and messages to the ones we love who have not yet passed. We haven’t got the time for such things. We’ve come to learn that truth is much more powerful than any fiction.

And where would we get the material from, anyway? Amazon may be a big deal in your reality, but over here, they have yet to open a branch. I suppose we could look over your shoulder when you’re reading or watching but that would be rude. Not only that, we would be continually waiting for you to turn the page. And as for the commercials… what a waste of eternity.

Of course, we don’t need to do that. Why? Because we can see everything. Whether it’s the sort of thing we used to enjoy when we existed in physical form or something new to us. We have all the time we need to seek out and explore it all.

We have no need for fiction. If we have a desire for a particular sort of story, we can always find a real one to watch as it unfolds. Whatever you might write about happens in real life (well, yours anyway). Any type of event, anywhere, anytime.

Although most of us try not to be too voyeuristic, especially if the drama concerns people we know and care about, and involves them getting hurt. As some of you (the more enlightened ones) know, it’s never easy to watch and know that you can’t change anything.

You give us plenty to deal with, getting the victims of your vices used to their new condition.

Priscilla (my house spirit) enjoys reading. She didn’t have enough time to read during her life and enjoys my small collection – and wishes I’d buy more.

We had a ghost at our last house, he used to turn the lights on and off. There’s nothing here, although we live beside a graveyard.
