I don’t know if I’ll be able to post this, but I’m writing it anyway. Sorry if that sounds a bit dramatic but it’s been that sort of week. And it’s only Tuesday.
On Sunday, my internet connection started to misbehave. It was randomly dropping out. I reset everything and it seemed to sort things out, as it usually does. On Monday, the problem reappeared, only it was worse. And this is where it gets really frustrating.
Because the service provider could find nothing wrong. Every time I managed to get hold of them, it was working perfectly. Yet, in between times, it would go slow or stop completley. Writing wasn’t getting auto-saved to my cloud storage, or even sticking to external sites, like Substack or this blog. If the connection dropped out before it saved, I was losing it all. And losing ideas and content is my biggest fear.
I’ve reverted to writing and saving it all locally and uploading it when I think I have a chance of keeping a stable connection for a while.
I hate that kind of fault, because you never know when it will strike. And it’s almost impossible to fix, unless you happen to get lucky.
It’s not the fastest connection in internet-land; it’s copper wire, not fibre and I generally get around 12Mb/s download speed. That’s slow, but it has been enough to run my computer, my wife’s tablet and stream content on my T.V., so I’ve never bothered upgrading.
I looked into my contract and found that, as I was just about to renew, I could get a fibre connection for not much more than I was currently paying. So I decided to go for it. They will install it in three weeks, and I’m told I will notice the difference. As long as it doesn’t drop out randomly, I’m good.
Meanwhile, I’m still faced with a fault that only exists when nobody is looking for it. For the next three weeks, I have no idea if I’ll be able to get online on my pc, or if anything I type will actually get saved or posted.
Hence my comment at the start, if you’re reading this, it’s working. If you’re not….., I will never know. Until I get my new connection.
