Laid low by a summer virus. A week in the life.

Warning. Contains medical details.

I woke up last Thursday and felt a bit “off.” Before you ask, I hadn’t had a drink for a couple of days, so it wasn’t that.

Anyhow, I got on with my day, but by lunchtime it was pretty obvious that something wasn’t right. I felt hot and cold, was coughing a lot and felt incredibly tired.

Yvonne went full-nurse on me, which is both reassuring and quite scary, in equal measure. I’m an awful patient at the best of times. Fortunately, I don’t get ill very often, so it’s a bit of a shock to my system when I’m not feeling 100%

Thursday night was bad, I coughed so much that I was sick, and then I couldn’t sleep. I finally managed to doze a little and eventually got up on Friday with a head that felt like it was full of cotton wool. It was hard to think straight. All the story ideas that normally fill my mind were silent.

It was a strange feeling. I didn’t even have the energy to do my morning trawl through social media. I really couldn’t be bothered.

I can’t really remember much about what happened on Friday. I think I napped, drank lots of Honey and Lemon, took paracetamol and felt sorry for myself. Friday night was better, I didn’t cough so much, but the lethargy remained on Saturday morning.

There was worse to come. Now, Yvonne had succumbed as well. Saturday was spent shuffling about, trying to care for each other. At least it had cooled down a bit by then, the heat hadn’t been helping. We didn’t fancy any of the food we had organised, so we’ve just been eating what many of you would describe as junk. It may have been, but it was comforting junk.

On Sunday, I was feeling a lot better. Yvonne, being one day behind me, was still in the rough phase. I started to feel better after lunch and managed to write a few words. I even took a look at my social media.

Monday morning found me just about back to normal. My cough had gone, I managed to get out for a walk around the block. Better than that, my head felt clearer and I was able to dictate around 2,000 of the words which had been stacking up in my head. More about that at a later date.

Sadly, Yvonne was still incapacitated on Tuesday, but was starting to show some improvement. I’m definitely better, which is a relief as I have my Father’s Day present arranged for Thursday (thanks, girls). That will also be something to talk about later.

On Wednesday, I felt much better. Then, as the day progressed, the virus reminded me that it had not completely gone. I had a relapse, lots of coughing and a headache. I’m sure that, since I had Covid, I’ve not coped as well with colds and viruses in general.

I can’t help thinking it’s had some long-term effects, both on my immune system and the viruses that are floating about.

If Yvonne recovers, and she’s getting there, we have a day out planned for Friday, weather permitting.
