There always seems to be so much to do.
You might think that a writer’s life is easy. You just sit around waiting for inspiration, type a few words here and there, then watch as the royalties roll in.
Actually, it’s more like a duck swimming across a pond. Calm and serene on the surface, paddling like mad where you can’t see it.
To give you an idea of my current job list, here are the projects that I currently have in progress. Bear in mind that I try to write at least two thousand words a day, every day. These might not all be on one subject, they‘re often spread over whatever I have to do. That’s getting close to a million words a year!
I currently have eight novels to finish, which may well be nine by the time I get to post this. You never know when inspiration will strike. Not only that, various people keep telling me they’d like to see sequels and series continuations. Their requests, as well as reviews, positive or negative, can trigger ideas or give me the enthusiasm to press on.
I also have five short stories to complete. Some of them might (as so many have) turn into novels or even series.
Just those two things will account for at least six-hundred thousand words, the best part of a years’ worth of writing on its own.
And that’s before we add.
NaNoWriMo 2021 to prepare for and write. A minimum of fifty thousand words, written in a month. Given that the total is well within my range, the only limit is my imagination, hence the prep work to give me enough broad ideas to fill in.
I also have A+ content to produce for most of my catalogue on Amazon, and I want to update several of my novel’s blurbs, in response to comments and suggestions that I’ve received.
These are the one-off jobs, added to this are the ongoing tasks
Blog posts, one or two a week of 4-500 words each.
Social media posts.
Answering emails and comments, keeping up to date with changes and new developments in self-publishing.
Updating my website and catalogue on Amazon
Not forgetting that it isn’t just a matter of writing things down, there’s a lot of research to be done, to make sure that everything, if not true, at least sounds true. Then there’s the editing and generally tidying up.
That takes a lot of time, at least as much as the actual act of getting the words down.
As I said, there’s a lot going on under the surface.
