A Whole new Look

Welcome back to another blog hop, with #OpenBook. Here’s this week’s prompt.

Hypothetical: Someone will pay to redecorate your living room. What would you like it to look like?

To be honest, I rather like it the way it is, all that it really needs are the floorboards re-varnished and a fresh coat of paint.

When we first looked at this house, back in 2010, we were stunned to find that all the furniture we had in our current property would fit perfectly here. It was as if we had purchased it for this house, not the one it was in.

We were downsizing, and the majority of the stuff we were leaving behind belonged to our adult children, so it wasn’t coming with us anyway. When I measured up, the new rooms were the exact size required to get things where they were wanted.

I’m talking about inch-perfect.

This was not mass-produced or self-assembly furniture. The modern stuff that’s all built to a standard size and is designed to be combined. These were pieces made of real wood, that we had collected over the years, from reclamation, antique shops and specialist manufacturers. They had been spread out over several locations in our old house, now they all needed to be in one room. Their aged finish all matched the bare floorboards and wooden doors.

That was one of the reasons we fell in love with this house. It felt like even the furniture wanted to be here.

So, all the room needs is a coat of paint. At the moment, we have a two-colour scheme, with a white ceiling and varnished woodwork. It creates a restful, cosy atmosphere. There’s enough paint in the shed to do it again. If anyone wants to come around and give me a hand, it shouldn’t take too long.

Of course, once we’ve done that, the rest of the house will probably look shabby in comparison and need redecoration.

For that reason alone, I’m happy with it as it is.
