Every day’s a school day.

Have you learned anything new this week (or recently?) Any topic.

I love learning new things. Writing Sci-fi is a great way of keeping my mind active, with the acquisition of new knowledge. What I learn through reading and researching online forms the building blocks of my future and alternative worlds.

In the last few days, I’ve been doing a lot of research for my next novel, the eighth Andorra Pett mystery. This time, I need to know a lot about the Asteroid Belt in general, as well as everything about one asteroid in particular. If you’ve been following along with Andorra’s story, you’ll know which one it is.

In a lot of ways, this is a fairly typical research week for me. I enjoy researching almost as much as I do writing. As a perfectionist, I need to know that the basic facts about everything in my fictional worlds are as scientifically correct as I can make them.

A feature of my particular brand of autism is that once I’ve read something, I never forget it. That can be a nuisance, as well as a blessing.

I digress. Other recent searches have included several aspects of 1950s Americana (for my Captain Starlight stories) and a few things about holograms and control systems, including where they might be leading in spaceship design. Very often, I’ll learn a lot about a particular thing, only to use that knowledge in one sentence, or even discard it altogether in the edit.

But then, it might always come in handy in the future.

On a non-writing theme, I’ve learned how to transfer all my data from my old smartphone to a new one after a terminal breakdown, mid-call with the hospital.

When everything on your phone works except voice calling, you have a problem. And I’m happy to report that I didn’t lose too much of my data in the process, largely because I backed all the pictures and videos up to my PC first.

That’s something I learned a long time ago.

What do you think about this week’s subject?

Yes, we can learn a lot through doing research on a particular subject. It’s always good to get our facts right. Somebody will always pick up on them if they’re not.

Oh yes, that’s another thing I quickly learned. I never realised there could be so many vociferous experts online.
