Drving me to distraction, one bleep at a time.

Welcome back to another blog hop, with #OpenBook. Here’s this week’s prompt.

Name a distraction that drives you mad when trying to work.

As it’s December, I suppose I can’t use the NaNoWriMo excuse anymore. Although, it was a distraction to my presence on social media.

There will be more about this year’s self-imposed deadline on Thursday.

Back to the subject. Distraction.

But first,

As you might gather, I’m easily distracted. It’s my own fault.

The bleep is one of the main culprits. The bleep that my phone makes at regular intervals throughout the day.

As well as messages from family, I get alerts when things that interest me appear online. Like a new YouTube video, an AI-generated scam email that starts by telling me my book (they’re very rarely specific) is wonderful or a reaction to something that I’ve said on social media.

I can’t leave it, I have to stop what I’m doing and investigate. After all, it might be important!

I can pass hours in this way.

If that wasn’t a big enough distraction, there are the shiny new story ideas that happen along and deflect me from whatever it is that I’m doing at the time.

Because they need to be written down, NOW!

Full of excitement and promise, the siren call of their characters is usually prompted by something I’ve seen or heard. So, it can be said that their emergence as an ongoing distraction is often the result of a singular distraction.

This is where it all gets complicated, as distraction breeds more distraction.

Occasionally, I can be distracted by one of the characters in the book I’m actually writing. Their voice will distract me from the story at hand by asking me for a bigger role in it, or even a book of their own. Or by pleading with me not to give them the “red-shirt” moment we can all see coming.

Whatever the distraction, when I manage to tear myself away and return to what I was doing, I can get on for a while.

Until it all happens again.
