New release. Jeryn’s Dagger. By D.L. Young.

I got this book after chatting with the author via email. Once again, I wasn’t disappointed.

I do love a space opera. I’ve written two, three-part space operas myself and appreciate the skill needed to build a story and universe that lasts over multiple parts.

Anyhow, here’s the blurb and cover.

A fresh recruit is the only hope of stopping Interstellar war.

Jeryn Lorsi is hardly ready for an important operation. An ex-black marketeer turned spy, he’s no hero.

But when tragedy strikes, that’s exactly what he’ll have to become.

A conflict of unimaginable scale threatens to end ten thousand years of Realm primacy, and Jeryn is the only one in the position to stop it.

War Is Coming… Interstellar civil war

The explosive first entry in a galaxy-spanning science fiction thrill ride by bestselling author D.L. Young! It’s perfect for fans of JN Chaney, MR Forbes, and Marko Kloos!

About the Author

D.L. Young is a Pushcart Prize nominee and winner of the Independent Press Award. He’s also much less serious than his author photo implies.

A lifelong science fiction fan, his intense, fast-paced novels echo his many influences from books and movies, including Star Wars, the Mad Max films, Dune, Blade Runner, Star Trek, Harlan Ellison, and the novels of William Gibson.

If you like page-turning, engaging science fiction, you’re definitely his kind of reader.

My thoughts. No spoilers.

I am in awe of the effort that went into the worldbuilding for this tale. There’s a fully functioning Galaxy here, with everything you need to make it come alive in your mind’s eye. It’s an incredible achievement that holds out promise for the rest of the series.

We’re ten thousand years into a Galactic civilisation. Humans, or at least their descendants, are the main focus of this story, but other races get more than a look-in.

There are insects, lizards and dogs, all sentient and interacting. And they all have plausible backstories.

Then there’s the setting, a collection of planets of infinite variety, connected through space in a really clever way. Bound together by a political system that has endured millennia.

The story has it all.

Political machinations, space battles and a glamorous villainess. There’s an impending civil war, the peace and stability of the Realm demand action. Jerryn is a small-time crook who has been recruited to the Realm’s Consul Minister’s security organisation.

It’ll be up to him to stop a war that could engulf the Galaxy.

He’s got his work cut out. As he soon discovers. The action, both political and in space, is both realistic and page-turning. There are shocks and twists along the way, keeping the pages turning.

The great thing about this story is that it’s the first part of a series. I’ll certainly be reading the rest of them.

Highly Recommended.
