Is there a character in your books with a wardrobe you wish you had?
Back in the day, I wore a uniform at work on board ship. When I worked for a Marine Insurance Company, investigating claims, a good suit was essential to create a positive first impression.
I can’t help thinking that these modes of dress, because they were non-negotiable, had a profound effect on the way I dressed when off-duty (maximum comfort and casual). And I’m equally sure they influenced the way I dress my characters.
Although I would have liked the chance to explore space myself, the wardrobe of my Sci-fi characters is hardly inspiring.
These spacefaring people tend to dress in utilitarian clothing, if they’re not in a spacesuit. So that’s overalls, boiler suits or, in the case of Andorra Pett, as she’s a bit of a rebel, she might change it up with jeans and a T-shirt for a big occasion.
She’s worn a dress twice in seven adventures. Once, for a court appearance in the novel Andorra Pett and Her Sister, the other for a date in Andorra Pett and the Oort Cloud Café.
It took her a while to get over both of those events.
When it comes to my contemporary fiction, there’s nothing out of the ordinary, just what people living their lives normally wear.
My personal favourites, in terms of sartorial elegance, are the characters in my Steampunk adventures. As befits the era they’re set in, the characters all dress in over-the-top late Victorian styles. Flamboyant suits for the gentlemen and voluminous gowns for the ladies.
As befits the class-obsessed culture of Norlandia, the cut and value of the materials will tell you a lot about the wearer.
Personally, in a nod to the Steampunk world, I rarely venture out in public without a waistcoat. I was doing that long before a certain Mr Southgate popularised the style.
Even though I normally pair it with jeans and a t-shirt, just like Andorra probably would.
