The allure of the next shiny new gadget.

Welcome back to another blog hop, with #OpenBook. Here’s this week’s prompt.

Don’t forget to click the link to see what everyone else has to say on this week’s subject. It’s at the end of my post.

What is a tool that you would like to get to help you do your writing? (Gadget/software, etc. – even a knick-knack for focus)

This bloghop prompt is getting spookier by the week. Just lately, it seems to be remarkably close to something that I’ve recently thought or blogged about.

If this had been the prompt a month ago, it would have been perfect, as you’ll see.

Over the years, I’ve tried all sorts of things to improve my ability to get some words down. I’ve worn out keyboards, typed a story on my phone while I was waiting for an appointment and tried all sorts of dictating gear, microphones and OCR (Scanning handwriting and converting it to text).

With varying degrees of success. I can type pretty fast, writing reports in my working life saw to that, but I want something I can use when I’m not sitting at a keyboard.

Like when inspiration strikes on one of my coastal walks.

And I think you can see why I might get ideas when I look at the mists over Man Sands.

Anyway, I tried recording on my phone, but the breeze makes it impossible for the transcription software to pick it up reliably.

As for trying to remember it until I get home, that’s fraught with problems; a conversation with another walker wipes it from my mind.

Hence, my latest acquisition. One of these. I’ve wanted one for ages. I got it as a Christmas present from Yvonne.

It’s better than my phone at capturing audio when I’m out and about, because that’s its function, instead of being an add-on to some other bit of kit. The transcription software has around 99% success. All I need to do is format, add speech marks and tidy it up.

So far this month, I’ve captured over 10,000 words which might otherwise have gone forever.

I can only recommend that you get one. For a shiny thing, it’s really useful.
