Finishing the story, why I need to write that sequel.

As well as the new ideas that I told you about last week, I Remember Everything and my other new story, My Sister Alex, I have several sequels in progress, I know that I really ought to get on and finish them.

Sequels seem to appear out of nowhere, all my series started as stand-alone stories. When I had almost finished most of them, I realised that there was scope for more adventures for the characters. Not only that, there was too much to be included in the story I was writing at the time. In some of them, more than one extra book suggested itself, in one case a spin-off emerged, using a single line from the source novel. This title now has a sequel of its own.

I digress, which is what I’m very good at doing when I should be doing something else, like writing. But I do have an excuse.

Currently, I have half-finished manuscripts for

A Land of their Own, the sequel to The Rocks of Aserol and A New Life in Ventis.

The Circle has no End, the sequel to Ribbonworld and Jungle Green

The Safety of the Realm, the sequel to The Sensaurum and the Lexis

Wake me Up, the sequel to Life and Other Dreams

Alysom’s revenge, the sequel to Survive

The as yet untitled sequel to The Hitman and the Thief

and finally,

Andorra Pett goes Lunar, the latest in her adventures.

Here’s the excuse, it’s all down to the voices in my head, the source of all my material.

If only they would co-operate, I could get them all done and out of the way. They give me glimpses, a few scenes here and there, in no particular order and I add them to their respective manuscripts. There will be a lot of sorting out, joining up and filling in the gaps required, once I get the message that we’re all done.

At the present rate, assuming that I can continue writing around 2,000 words a day, it will take me about a year to finish them all, without allowing any time for all the other stuff that I do, the blog hops, reading and book reviews, social media and posts like these.

To say nothing of the short stories and new projects that I’m also writing. As well as any more ideas that might come to me. Sometimes I wonder where I ever found the time to go to work.

And, of course, that’s not the end of things. Once I have finished any of the stories, there will be editing, cover design, beta reads, rewrites and all the other associated tasks that need to be completed before I can publish it.

By which time, will anyone remember the original story and be interested in a sequel?

As it’s highly unlikely, it means that I will probably have to re-release the original story with a new cover and require a new marketing push to bring what is now a series back into view.

The one thing that I’m sure about is that I WILL finish every story that I’ve started.

Maybe.

Now I’m off to get a bit more done. The only question is, which voices will be dictating to me today?
