The best line wot I wrote.

Welcome back to another blog hop, with #OpenBook. Here’s this week’s prompt.

Whatā€™s the best line youā€™ve written recently? Or ever?

You might think, with over twenty novels to my name, that I would be overflowing with lines of such sumptuous magnificence that I would be lost for choice. Or something.

Well, I have written some lines of which I feel proud, but therein lies a problem.

They mostly rely on context for their appeal.

So, I could give you a line but then Iā€™d have to explain a lot about it. Which kind of spoils the effect.

Actually, the line that Iā€™m most proud of comes not from a novel, but from a blurb.

In a blurb, itā€™s different, you have to make a statement without context that grabs a potential reader by the throat and gives them a good shake.

This is from the blurb for my Steampunk adventure, The Sensaurum and the Lexis.

The story is a bit of a nod to Jules Verne and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a quasi-Victorian romp filled with amazing machines, mad professors, megalomaniacs bent on world domination, plucky underdogs, etc. etc.

ā€œIn a world of steam and clockwork, evil forces are at work.ā€

I love this line, because itā€™s so suggestive of what the whole story is about. Click the cover to find out more.

Is Jackson Thwaite ready to discover the secret of Makewright Orphanage?

Although he doesn’t know it, he has been selected to be part of something vital to the land of his birth.

Norlandia is a country under threat, as never before. The old heroes are but a memory, while evil forces gather, seeking power.

They are armed with the latest devices that perverted science has devised.

Control of Norlandia and everyone in it is their ultimate aim.

Who will stand in their way?

Under the command of the mysterious Mortimer Langdon, all that stands between civilisation and anarchy are Jackson and the rest of The Orphan Detectives.
