After nine years of self-publishing, I had an idea for a special edition.
Incidentally, where did those nine years go?
As well as the series that I write, I also pen the occasional stand-alone novel. I enjoy writing them, it gives me a break from the series and allows me to create whole new worlds and situations.
However, I find these novels hard to sell, advertising is expensive, as there is no read through you need to have a very low cost per click to make any sort of profit.
I had the idea of combining three of my stand-alone stories in a single volume. This had the twin purpose of making it possible to have a higher spend and still make money, plus it introduces me to a potentially larger readership, who may then go on to try my series.
The first job was to choose the stories and join them together into one file.
The stories are best explained by the blurb I wrote.
Three different tales of the future, from Richard Dee.
Life and Other Dreams. Where do your dreams take you?
Survive. Lost in space. That’s the good news.
The Hitman and the Thief. It was one last job for the hitman, what could possibly go wrong?
Life and Other Dreams. Rick lives here, Dan lives there, the thing is, they’re the same person. As his dreams and his reality start to mix, you have to question which life is real and which is the dream.
“Absolutely amazing, from a fresh original voice in fiction.”
Survive. When a galactic survey goes wrong, the survivors are stranded on an unknown and inhospitable planet. They soon discover that the man in charge is not the right person for the job. From the uncharted jungle to the corridors of power, it’s all about surviving.
“A gripping survival story that transitions into a scary conspiracy thriller. Unmissable!”
The Hitman and the Thief. Dan Jones is the hitman for crime boss Fliss Bauer. When a rival threatens her empire, Dan is told to remove them. His hit goes wrong, thanks to an unexpected intervention. To save himself, he’s made to join forces with the thief. If they can get the job done together, they’ll both stay alive.
“A brilliant sci-fi crime thriller with some fantastic twists….”
The next job was to design a cover. Since I’ve always been a fan of Sci-fi from the “Golden Age,” I went with something that I could see as coming from that time.
As for price, to give good value I decided to initially price the collection at £2.99 ($3.99) or the equivalent. This means you get two of the stories free.
